Digital prototypes
A digital prototype is a version of your board game that lives on a screen instead of a table, usually inside a sandbox like Tabletop Simulator on Steam. The pieces behave like physical pieces: players pick up cards, roll dice, and move tokens with a mouse, but nobody has to print, cut, or ship anything.
The biggest advantage is reach. Your playtest pool stops being the people within driving distance and becomes anyone online, including the active communities of designers who trade remote playtests every week. The second advantage is iteration speed. Changing fifty cards in a digital deck means editing a spreadsheet and re-uploading, not reprinting and re-sleeving. Many designers now do their heaviest iteration digitally and only print physical copies for conventions and blind tests.
The traditional cost of digital prototyping was setup time, since tools like Tabletop Simulator historically required scripting and manual asset assembly. No-code platforms have removed most of that barrier.
